Pool
cues were flying, kids were screaming, and parents were yelling as we entered
the boys and girls club this past Thursday night. Then I woke up, just a dream.
Thursday
was quite the opposite. We got
there early to set up; ready to go… and we had a grand total of 8 kids show
up. Not quite the 30 kids that we
were expecting, but there were certainly some benefits to a smaller crowd.
One
of the main benefits was the connection we had with the kids that were
there. It was a really cool
experience to get to be able to connect with these kids, and put smiles on
their faces.
The
way that we were able to do this was through making art from random
materials. Our original idea was
to make it a recycled project, however we ended up having it be more of a
project of randomness. Combining
cardboard, buttons, puffballs, googely eyes, and beads we created masterpieces
of art. Pieces like presents,
Christmas trees, and pets were the most popular.
We
definitely felt a little defeated when we found out there were only going to be
a few kids , however in the end we were able to make better connections with
them than we ever would have if there were a bunch of kids.
