"Everything you've always wanted"

Birds. Geisha girls. Piano keys. Waves. Fans. Blades. Palm trees.
What I love most about this piece, "Everything you've always wanted" by Jon Faulks, is that I see something different every time I look at it. The first night I came to help at Terrain, it automatically caught my eye. I saw it from far away and was surprised and amazed to find that it was actually made up of window blinds. Really? I had to look at the description. Yepp. "Window blinds, Hardware," was all it said.

Faulks managed to take a household item- that is often overlooked - and turn it into a masterpiece. The shapes, colors, and placement looked both accidental and carefully orchestrated all at the same time. The killer brick backdrop that the piece happened to be hanging on helped as well. This piece reminds me of the "DIY" generation of artists that are emerging now. Thanks to popular social sites like Pinterest, everyone can use common household items to make art. Everything from coffee filters, to old doors, to used peanut butter jars, can be used to decorate a home. I think that's the way art should be. Finding beauty in the common, the obscure, and even the trash!

Terrain was such a fun and enlightening experience. This project really embodied the "Getting involved with the art opportunities in the community" goal that the WHITTY ART COMMITTY has set forth to achieve.  I can't wait to go back next year- and maybe submit some of my photography work!
