On
October 5th Terrain held it’s fifth annual, one-night-only
gallery. Props go to all the hard work the Terrain group put in to celebrate
young, up-and-coming artists in the Spokane area.
Terrain’s
gallery space was even bigger this year, opening up a third level of Spokane’s
Music City Building. Even more
interesting was the space for the poetry readings. They placed real sod to lay/sit on and had a swing and
hammock to relax in. The mood was set with spotlights and Christmas lights, and
the walls spotted with paintings and prints. Sculptures were present in corners and pedestals on the 3rd
and 2nd levels but with an added graffiti wall in the bar area on
the second. The main level had
small rooms to float in and out of and a bigger area with snacks and other
sculptures. The spaced flowed
well, especially for how crowded it was at some points in the night, especially when the bands played.
The
high point for me was listening to the Terrible Buttons. This blues/folk band caught my
attention immediately. Vocalists, Kent Ueland and
Sarah Berentson matched the Terrain atmosphere perfectly with their dark, moody
lyrics and indie style. Terrible
Buttons came from the streets of Portland and now reside in Spokane, but do
tour. Dates to go check them out
can be found at http://www.reverbnation.com/terriblebuttons.
This
odd show that collects quirky art and attracts atypical artist and patrons is a
wonderful addition to the Spokane art scene. Terrain is growing every year, and I look forward to more
shows and hope to participate in the future.
